Meet our Head Coaches - Camp BONA where faith, Fun, hard wor

Coach Michael Mitchell

  

Coach Michael is a father and is married to his high school sweetheart (Patricia) for 26 years. Michael is the proud father of two, both children are currently attending college, his son Brandon (eagle scout) is at TAMU Corpus Christi and his daughter is at TAMU College Station. Michael has worked for over 10 years with one the largest commercial general contractors in the state. He leads an estimating team that works for clients primarily located in the Medical Center of Houston. They include UTHSC, MDACC, Memorial Hermann, Methodist, Baylor College of Medicine as well as Rice University and University of Houston. Michael is grounded in his community as president of his HOA since 2006 to present. His community involvement began in 2003 as he coached his son and daughters’ teams including baseball, softball, and basketball through the years.  Michael is an avid outdoors-man who was an assistant scout master with Troop 993 for 8 years. He has been engaged as a Coach for Camp BONA since the origin of camp in 2014 and is in charge of safety and meals. His passion for mentoring, camping and all things outdoors is vital towards the mission of Camp BONA and the safety of all involved. 

Coach Eric Arriaga

Coach Eric is the Advocacy Director of the BONA Foundation and the owner of  Fuerte Family Fitness. . Eric is the patriarch of his family and a living example of family loyalty and servant leadership.  He has been a trainer at BONA Fitness since 2016 and has been a coach for Camp BONA since 2020. Eric is the cornerstone of camp leadership.  He has a unique way of making sure everyone is engaged and heard.  Eric is an essential leader in the  bridge between the mission of the BONA Foundation and the community. 


Coach Wayland Harrison

Coach Wayland believes  If better is possible, good is not enough.
"I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve their goals and it is my job to help people recognize that potential and use it for success."
Coach Wayland has coached and mentored in youth programs for over 15 years and served many years as the Athletic Director for the Competitive Edge Youth Foundation.

Former University of Texas Football player.
Former University of Texas Powerlifter. (Jr World Champion)

Coach Javicz Jones

 Coach Javicz Jones (JJ) - Is the owner of JaBeast Fitness and Wellness.  He is a form professional football player and a IFL  Hall  of Famer.  JJ has been training at BONA Fitness since 2016.  He has been a coach at Camp BONA since 2019 and he has a unique ability to physically and mentally push all campers and coaches to new levels.

Coach Jonathan Norris

 Coach Jonathan Norris - Is the owner of Norris Fitness & Health.  Jonathan is a family man.  He has  a daughter and two bonus sons.  Jonathan is a systems guy.  He has a distinct method for making sure he and his clients improve everyday.  Jonathan has been training at BONA Fitness since 2015.  He has been a coach at Camp BONA since 2019 and he sets the bar for discipline by example at camp. 

Coach Denisa Ballard

Denisa Ballard is a wife and a mother of two children. Denisa studied music for many years and is a former opera singer. Currently, Denisa works full-time as a Regional HR Professional for an Oil and Gas company.  Denisa lost over 70 pounds in her fitness journey and overcame the insecurity she had with her body image to compete in and win several National Physique Committee (NPC) figure competitions in 2021. While her fitness journey was challenging, she found tools, resources and motivations that kept her on her path to becoming healthier and happier. She is passionate about helping others realize their potential to be the best version of themselves. Her goal is to inspire others to do the same and does a great job of doing that by sharing her experience. Denisa is a great example and inspirations to the young ladies involved with Camp BONA. 

Coach Patricia Mitchell

  Coach Patricia - A Texas A&M graduate, a forensic accountant, wife, and proud mother of 2 adult children. Patricia is a master of systems, a visionary thinker, and offers a very unique skillset for Camp BONA.  As camp grows into the true mission of our foundation, it will be Patricia's foresight and insight that will assure our success and the success of our campers.

Coach Dawn Carlson-Scruggs

  Coach Doc Dawn - A UT graduate, a retired assistant superintendent of elementary schools, former college athlete, and wife. Dawn's 31 years in education brings  structure  and scalability to Camp  BONA.  Dawn has the insight and foresight to make sure our book study during camp is rewarding and enlightening for camper and coaches.

Coach Zion is a graduate of Augustana College majoring in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology. He played varsity water polo, and was the president of the Black Student Union. He has a passion for spreading aquatics to underprivileged communities, and  he and his  sister recently  started a non-profit to serve this populace. Zion is the head water polo coach of Fleet Club Water Polo.

Coach Amy - A Proud mother of 4 and has a work ethic second to none.  One key attribute we want all campers to have is pride for leaving not only our camp sites better than we found them, but also everything and everyone we encounter.  Amy is the heart of camp pride and her unique view on life and spirituality empowers campers and coaches alike.

Coach Deborah is a Senior Mechanical engineering major at the University of Houston. She is in the ROTC program and plans to commission into active duty following graduation. Deborah also likes to create and draw in her spare time.

Coach Justin graduated from Episcopal High School. Currently majoring in Biology and Politics at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. Was a camper at Camp BONA for 3 years and have been counselor/coach for 4 years.  Justin is a deep thinker and helps us all think outside of the box.

  Coach Natalie is our FFA liaison.  She plays an integral roll in our ablity to support the FFA students throughout Katy ISD.  Natalie brings a love for the outdoors and nature to camp that is contagious.

  Coach Leslie is a former D1 collegiate bowler and a dedicated student majoring in IT Cybersecurity. She maintains a balanced work and study schedule and aspires to break into the remote IT field.
